Be proactive and pray for people and their needs

Updated: May 14, 2022

"I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!” (John 14:12-14 NLT).

Since Jesus said that, you can rest assured that it is the truth. This means that you can do the same things that Jesus did when He was in the flesh on earth. You can see the sick cured, relationships healed, people brought to salvation, demons banished and God’s Kingdom enlarged.

It doesn’t make any sense that God’s Kingdom was ushered in with miracles, signs and wonders and that today His power has shrunk to a short session on a Sunday followed by tea and bikkies! Jesus said that His church would advance in power “and all the powers of hell will not conquer it” (Matt 16:18). That means that we must wield the same power that Jesus did!

John Wimber wrote:

Christian signs and wonders are beyond rationality but they serve a rational purpose: to authenticate the gospel. The gospel is opposed to the pluralistic lie that says all religious experience is equally valid. Signs and wonders validate Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and His lordship over every area of our lives.”[1]

Jesus didn't come to create Christianity but to reveal the Father and it was through signs and wonders that the Father’s giving heart was manifested. Since Jesus returned to the Father, in His absence we have been given the task of revealing the Father. When you believe in Jesus, go and do the same works that He did. Since God was a giver, you be a giver to others, also.

Start by praying for people. If you don’t know who to pray for, ask God to show you and He will. He may give you a vision or bring the person to you. Other times, just step out in faith and expect that God will show up. Just ask the person how they would like you to pray for them.

If you prayed for the gift of the Holy Spirit, don’t doubt God’s presence with you. Doubt is a form of atheism. Just pray and don’t be attached to the outcome. Plenty of times I have prayed for someone’s disease or sickness and not seen an instant result but, on the other hand, I have personally seen amazing miracles happen immediately.

Just follow Jesus’ command:

“ These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe: They will cast out demons in my name, and they will speak in new languages. They will be able to handle snakes with safety, and if they drink anything poisonous, it won’t hurt them. They will be able to place their hands on the sick, and they will be healed.” (Mark 16:16-18).

* NLT used for all quotations.
