#30 Women of God: Huldah the prophetess

It’s almost spring time –the traditional time to spring clean, even though, in reality, people have been spring-cleaning all throughout the pandemic lockdown! There are always surprises when you spring clean – like discovering long lost items or memories.

Back in the reign of King Josiah while the house of the Lord in Jerusalem was being repaired, the Book of the Law was discovered (2 Chronicles 34:14-33). The King was horrified to read about how far their conduct towards God was removed from what God wanted. He read about the wrath of the Lord for non-obedience and was fearful.

He sent for a woman to understand the heart of God. Huldah was known as a “keeper of the wardrobe” and a prophetess (2 Chronicles 34:22). She confirmed that disaster was indeed coming upon Jerusalem because they had forgotten God and were idolatrous. Because the King had humbled himself before God, had torn his clothes and wept before God, God said that the destruction of Judah wouldn’t happen in his lifetime. Thereafter King Josiah endeavoured to please God with all his heart and follow all the words of the covenant which were written in this book.

Huldah was known as a godly woman through whom God spoke. Because of her faithful revelation of what God would do in the future, she played a key role in the revival of the nation under King Josiah. Her words brought King Josiah to full repentance for Judah’s shortcomings and sin in failing to do all that God had commanded.

In a similar way, Jesus sat down with people who were not following God, “tax collectors and sinners” (Luke 5:30). Jesus described those people as being sick and needing a physician. He told them, “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance” (Luke 5:32).

Just like Huldah spoke to the heart of King Josiah and he turned fully towards God, so Jesus speaks to your heart for you to change your way of life and turn fully to Him. When you repent and turn to Jesus, He will forgive and give you life for evermore.

"And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent" John 17:3).
