5 Habits to keep your mind on God, not on your problems

David, in Psalm 37, has given us the simple keys for getting our minds off ourselves and our worries and putting our minds on God.

1. Don't compare yourself with others

Don't look at what is happening to other people: 'Don't be worried on account of the wicked; don't be jealous of those who do wrong' (Psa. 37:1). Because David repeats this idea several times, it must be the biggest issue for our anxieties. We need to get our eyes off ourselves and others and look to Jesus to tell us who we are. We need to stop thinking that God isn’t in control.

This is what God says when we say “the LORD has abandoned us! He has forgotten us.” The LORD answers, “Can a woman forget her own baby and not love the child she bore? Even if a mother should forget her child, I will never forget you. I can never forget you! I have written your name on the palms of my hands” (Isa. 49:14-16 GNB). You were made in God’s image and He has loved, liberated and redeemed you to be who you are in Him, right now.

2. Trust in the LORD

Trust in the LORD and do good; live in the land and be safe. Seek your happiness in the LORD, and He will give you your heart’s desire” (Psa. 37:3-4 GNB). Turn to God and “put your hope in the LORD and obey His commands” (v 34 GNB).

Paul adds: “Don't worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking him with a thankful heart. And God's peace, which is far beyond human understanding, will keep your hearts and minds safe in union with Christ Jesus” Phil.4:6-7 GNB).

3. Give yourself to the LORD

Trust in Him and He will help you; He will make your righteousness shine like the noon-day sun” (Psa. 37:5-6 GNB).

4. Be patient and wait for the LORD to act

(Psa. 37:7 GNB)

5. Don't give in to worry and anger

(Psa. 37:8 GNB). Speak the promise – not the problem. The Bible is full of promises and blessings. (Just read the long list in Deut. 28:1-14 for starters and see what God has promised to those who love and obey Him). Find a promise in the Bible that suits your particular situation and speak that into your life. I keep a list of promises on my frig door and read them aloud regularly to remind me that God has promised me answers to all my problems.
