Can we hear the voice of God today?

Elisha was able to accurately relate to the king of Israel the battle plans of the king of Aram purely from listening to the voice of the Spirit. The king of Aram thought they had a traitor in their midst and this was his officer’s response: “It’s not us, my lord the king,” one of the officers replied. “Elisha, the prophet in Israel, tells the king of Israel even the words you speak in the privacy of your bedroom!” (2 Kings 6:12).

I met a lady today who heard the Spirit of God telling her that her husband of 29 years was in love with another woman and even gave her her name. When her husband returned from work she confronted him with this new information. He immediately went ghostly white and accused her of having him followed. But it was all true and sadly, the confrontation didn’t bring her husband to repentance.

The ability to know facts about a situation, or a spiritual principle, that could not have been known by natural means is referred to as a “word of knowledge”, and it was one of the 9 gifts of the Spirit that were given to believers (I Cor. 12:8). When we are in a situation where we need to know something and it is not available to us through our natural ability or education or through our senses, then God in His sovereignty releases to us a fragment of his total knowledge.

Peter demonstrated this gift when he supernaturally knew that Ananias and Sapphira were being deceptive about bringing the entire proceeds from a land sale into the church’s collection.

From time to time God speaks words of knowledge into our hearts so that we can use wisdom and discretion in our ministry with Him. Frequently those words of knowledge are given to us to call someone to repent before the Lord. It’s often when that person has refused to hear God’s gentle call to repentance and their heart has been hardened that God introduces a challenging strategy to win them back.

God has equipped His Spirit-filled saints so that they can be described as being “as majestic as an army with billowing banners” (Song of Sol. 6:10). Yielding and operating in the gifts of the Spirit is a privilege to the believer so that the church of God becomes so magnificent that the enemies of God are put to flight.

So when you are Spirit filled, yes, you will hear the voice of God, today.
