Eternity and the unfathomable love of God

This morning it dawned on me that God’s love that is poured out on us in this life is going to go on and on forever and that that love, in eternity, is going to be unimaginable. Even though God’s love surpasses all our human understanding and is far greater than any other love we can experience on this earth, there is more. God is going to shower us with overwhelming never-ending love.

Just look at how Paul describes it:

4 But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, 5 that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) 6 For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus. 7 So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus. (Col. 2:4-7)

I can’t help thinking how God demonstrated his perfect and unconditional love for us in the most profound way on the cross by sending His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins. Jesus willingly laid down his life out of love for us. He took upon himself the punishment that we deserved. This act of selfless love reconciled us to God and made a way for us to experience His eternal love.

So what will that kind of selfless love look like in eternity?

In eternity, the love of God will exist in its purest and most magnificent form. It will transcend all human comprehension and be unlike anything we have ever experienced. God's love will be all-encompassing, unconditional, and everlasting. In this eternal realm, there will be no limits or boundaries to God's love. In eternity, God's love will be utterly perfect, free from any taint of sin, doubt, or fear. This love will heal all wounds, mend broken hearts, and fill every soul with an overwhelming sense of belonging and purpose. There will be unending peace and joy. Furthermore, God's love in eternity will be a love of complete unity and harmony-- a relationship bound together inside the Godhead.

In this everlasting love, there will be no room for hatred, injustice, or suffering. God's love will wipe away all tears, soothe every ache, and bring an unending sense of peace and serenity to all who dwell in its presence. Indeed, the love of God in eternity will be the greatest gift bestowed upon creation. It will be the ultimate fulfilment of our deepest longings and desires. As we bask in the eternal love of God, we will experience a love so profound, so pure, and so complete that it will exceed anything our finite minds can comprehend. Perhaps this is what Paul meant when he wrote:

I was caught up to paradise and heard things so astounding that they cannot be expressed in words, things no human is allowed to tell. (2 Cor. 12:4).

It’s certainly something we can’t even begin to imagine this side of eternity.
