Faith comes by hearing

"So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." (Rom. 10:17, KJV).

Have you ever noticed that this verse does NOT say that faith comes by reading the word of God? Faith has come by hearing which, in turn, was confirmed by the Word of God. Since many people (including myself) have come to know the good news about Jesus Christ as the crucified and risen Saviour without ever having heard a single Christian preach to them or read a single Christian tract, then hearing must mean more than having someone witness to you and it must mean more than merely reading the word of God.

Hearing the voice of God must be the only way we can come to saving faith. Every single person who has come to understand the Gospel has heard the voice of God, which can come through the voice of another, experiences, God moving on your heart as you read, the actual audible voice of God or impressions in your mind, (the way the Spirit commonly communicates with our spirit).

Learning to understand the presence of the Spirit and hearing His voice is an exciting gift that Jesus left us when He departed for heaven. “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you” (John 14:16-18 NLT).

When you understand that God is Spirit, you get to understand that His voice will be a Spirit voice that communes with our Spirit in Spirit language, if you like. I’ve known a few people who have heard the audible voice of God, and many have heard His voice at different times in the Bible where His voice sounded like thunder or many waters, but everyone who is born again can hear His Spirit voice communing with their spirit.

The still small voice is there to “teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you“(John 14:26 NLT).

If you haven’t received the gift of the Holy Spirit, there is nothing to hold you back from asking today. Jesus said, “So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him” (Luke 11:13 NLT).
