We have ever increasing cases of Omicron in NSW and health officials are declaring that everyone will be affected by it. I’ve met people who are very anxious and fearful about catching Covid.

It all reminds me of the hopeless days of Amos when the wicked Israelites were told that:

“Flight will be lost to the swift [so they will be unable to escape], And the strong shall not strengthen nor maintain his power, Nor shall the mighty man save his own life. “He who handles the bow will not stand his ground, The one who is swift of foot will not escape, Nor will he who rides the horse save his life [from the invading army]. “Even the bravest among the warriors shall flee naked on that day,” says the Lord” (Am. 2:14-16).

Amos doesn’t leave us hanging with this dismal outlook but asks us to:

“Seek (long for, require) good and not evil, that you may live; And so may the Lord God of hosts be with you, Just as you have said!” (Am. 5:14)

By trusting in God we can live without fear and worry. Nothing can make us afraid when we turn to our faithful God and seek His protection and care.

I like how the psalmist describes the shelter and security that we have in God when we depend on Him:

“He will cover you and completely protect you with His pinions, And under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and a wall” (Psa. 91:4).

A new year is upon us. Take courage and have confidence in our God.
