Waiting

Have you ever noticed how many times we are told in the Bible to wait? I started thinking about this when I read:

"In the morning, O Lord, You will hear my voice; In the morning I will prepare [a prayer and a sacrifice] for You and watch and wait [for You to speak to my heart]." (Psalm 5:3 in the Amplified Bible (AMP)).

In this instance we are advised to meditate and wait for God to speak to our heart. It could be an immediate answer or an answer a while later.

Some people in the Bible got quick answers:

"Then Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid! Take your stand [be firm and confident and undismayed] and see the salvation of the LORD which He will accomplish for you today; for those Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see again." (Ex. 14:13 AMP).

Jesus waited until Lazarus had been in the grave for 4 days before He appeared.

The disciples waited 10 days in an upper room before they received the promised Holy Spirit.

Others waited 13 years, like Joseph who was a slave for 13 years before he was elevated to 2nd to Pharoah. David also had to wait 13 years after he was anointed before he actually became king.

Abraham waited 25 years before he met his promised heir, Isaac.

Noah waited a whopping 120 years for the promised flood to come.

Are you beginning to see a pattern here? God delays answers because He knows humans are impatient. He is making us trust in Him against all opposing indications. He wants us to get over the frustration, the distractions and to concentrate on what He has promised and focus on Him against all our own thoughts.

In other words, waiting for God to act on His promises involves faith – confident expectation of God hearing and acting.

Wait for and confidently expect the Lord; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for and confidently expect the Lord. (Psa. 27:14 AMP).

But as for me, I will look expectantly for the Lord and with confidence in Him I will keep watch; I will wait [with confident expectation] for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me. (Mic. 7:7 AMP).

Waiting on God to action His promises brings blessings:

But those who wait for the Lord [who expect, look for, and hope in Him] will gain new strength and renew their power; They will lift up their wings [and rise up close to God] like eagles [rising toward the sun]; they will run and not become weary, they will walk and not grow tired. (Isa. 40:31 AMP).

God’s promises are all throughout the Bible – promises of salvation for loved ones, restoration of families, redemption from sinful lives, healing, forgiveness of sins to name the obvious ones.

The Lord is good to those who wait [confidently] for Him, to those who seek Him [on the authority of God’s word]. (Lam. 3:25 AMP).

What promise of God are you waiting for today?
