Letter 7: Why some Christians aren’t healed

About 40 years ago I met a man who had had terminal liver cancer. Actually, it was when he had been given a week to live that he decided to do something about it.

The cancer patient focussed only on his goal, to be healed and he indeed “went into remission” for at least 40 years beyond his predicted date of death.

After his survival, his oncologist started referring terminally ill cancer patients to him.

My friend told me that he could predict with 100% accuracy who would survive. Those who were 100% focussed on the goal and not the symptoms, survived.

If people in the secular world have learnt this principle of cancer survival, why don’t those in God’s kingdom? Why do some Christians focus on their problems and not on the promise? We have a Saviour who paid dearly for our healing and our eyes shouldn’t move from Him.

We sing, “Fight the good fight with all your might” and “Oh God, the battle belongs to You and every fear I lay at Your feet” and “It may look like I'm surrounded, but I'm surrounded by You” and then we take our eyes off our divine serpent on the pole and focus on where the serpent has bitten us. (Num 21:8-9; John 3:14).

Our battle against cancer is not a romp in the park. It’s a BATTLE! It’s a time for all the Ephesians 6 armour to be strongly strapped to us and for us to go on the defensive with our shield of faith and on the offensive with our sword of the Spirit, the Word of God.

Our battle cry should be: “I will not die but live, and will proclaim what the LORD has done” (Psalm. 118:17). We should be screaming: “By His wounds I am healed!”     (1 Pet. 2:24).

There is no time to lick our wounds. Our faith must be on that cross where every disease known to man was nailed.

If ever we want to wallow in self-pity, we should read Psalm 22. Jesus suffered so we don’t have to.

I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint.

My heart has turned to wax; it has melted within me. My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death.” (Vv14-15 NIV).

Our battle is with unseen malevolent spiritual forces. Only by fighting in the Spirit will we conquer.

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (Eph. 6:12).

Heavenly Father,

Please open the eyes of our hearts so that we can perceive the spiritual battle we face against cancer. Help us to comprehend the depth of the struggle, both seen and unseen, and grant us the strength to confront it with faith and courage.

Lord, we ask for Your healing touch upon our  bodies. Restore health and renew our spirits.

Surround us with Your love and protection, shield us from fear and despair. Remind us of Your promises, and fill us with hope as we lean on You and to trust in Your plan for our lives.

Thank You for Your unfailing love and support.

In Jesus' name, we pray.

Amen.
